When Should You Replace Your Tyres in Perth?

Perth's climate is brutal on rubber. Long hot summers, UV exposure in driveways, and salt air near the coast all age tyres faster than the official "10 year max" figure suggests.

Here's how to decide.

The three replacement triggers

1. Tread depth

  • Legal minimum in WA: 1.5 mm across the centre 75% of the tread.
  • Safe minimum in the wet: 3 mm. Below this, wet braking distance roughly doubles.
  • Use a 20-cent coin — if you can see the platypus's bill, you're close to the limit.

2. Age

  • 6 years: get them inspected annually.
  • 10 years: replace regardless of tread. The rubber compound has hardened, grip is gone.
  • Check the DOT date code (last 4 digits = week/year).

3. Visible damage

  • Sidewall cracks / "weather checking" — common on Perth cars parked in the sun. Once cracks reach the cord, replace immediately.
  • Bulges — internal cord damage from a pothole. Replace that day.
  • Uneven wear — fix the alignment cause first, or new tyres will wear the same way.

Free tread check

Drive in to Unit 7/21 Kewdale Rd, Welshpool any time Mon–Fri 8–5 or Sat 9–12:30. We'll measure all four, check the date codes, and give you an honest answer — even if the answer is "you've got another 6 months."
