When to Replace Tyres in Perth Heat (Aussie Summer Guide)
When to Replace Tyres in Perth Heat
Perth summer climate is brutal on tyres. UV exposure, 40C+ ambient temps and hot bitumen (which can hit 65C) accelerate rubber degradation faster than almost anywhere in Australia.
The 4 signs you cannot ignore
1. Sidewall cracking (weathering)
Small spider-web cracks on the sidewall mean the rubber is breaking down. Cracks deeper than 2mm = replace immediately.
2. Tread depth below 3mm
Legal minimum is 1.5mm, but stopping distance increases dramatically below 3mm — especially in Perth summer rain when roads turn slick.
Quick check: insert a 20c coin into the tread groove. If the platypus bill is visible, you are below 3mm.
3. Bulges or blisters
Internal cord damage — usually from hitting a pothole or driving under-inflated in heat. Replace immediately.
4. Tyre age (the silent killer)
Even with tread left, tyres over 6 years old in Perth should be replaced. Check the DOT code: last 4 digits = week/year of manufacture.
Why heat matters more in Perth
- UV breaks down rubber polymers
- Hot bitumen accelerates contact-patch wear
- High temps push internal pressures up
- Salt-laden coastal air corrodes steel belts
Summer maintenance checklist
- Check pressures monthly (cold)
- Rotate every 10,000 km
- Park in shade when possible
- Use manufacturer-recommended pressure, not the max on the sidewall
