Tyre Size Guide for Aussie Cars

Every tyre sidewall has a string like 225/45R17 91W. Here is what each part means.

Reading the sidewall

Example: 225/45R17 91W

  • 225 — Section width in mm
  • 45 — Aspect ratio (sidewall is 45% of width)
  • R — Radial construction
  • 17 — Rim diameter in inches
  • 91 — Load index (91 = 615 kg per tyre)
  • W — Speed rating (W = up to 270 km/h)

Where to find your size

1. Tyre placard — inside the driver door jamb. Most reliable.

2. Owner manual — full list including options.

3. Current tyre sidewall — what is fitted now (may not match placard).

Common Aussie sizes by vehicle

| Vehicle | Common size |

|---|---|

| Toyota Corolla | 195/65R15, 205/55R16 |

| Mazda 3 | 205/60R16, 215/45R18 |

| Hyundai i30 | 205/55R16, 225/45R17 |

| Toyota Camry | 215/55R17, 215/60R16 |

| Toyota RAV4 | 225/65R17, 235/55R19 |

| Mazda CX-5 | 225/65R17, 225/55R19 |

| Toyota Hilux | 265/65R17, 265/60R18 |

| Ford Ranger | 255/70R16, 265/60R18 |

| Toyota Landcruiser 200 | 285/65R17, 285/60R18 |

Can you change sizes?

Yes, but the overall rolling diameter must stay within +/-3% of original or your speedo reads wrong.

Load and speed ratings — do not downgrade

If placard says 91W, fitting 88H is illegal and dangerous. Always match or exceed.
