How Long Do Tyres Last in Perth?
Manufacturers love quoting big numbers — "up to 100,000 km!" — but real-world Perth conditions are tougher. Here is what we actually see in our Welshpool workshop.
Premium passenger tyres (Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone)
60,000-80,000 km on average. Some careful highway drivers get 90,000+.
Mid-range passenger tyres (Hankook, Kumho, Yokohama)
45,000-65,000 km in mixed Perth driving.
Budget tyres (Maxxis, Nexen, GT Radial)
35,000-50,000 km. Good value if you replace more often.
4WD all-terrains (BFG KO2, Cooper AT3, Toyo OPAT3)
50,000-70,000 km on highway-heavy use. Drops to 35,000-45,000 km if you do a lot of corrugated gravel.
What kills tyres faster in Perth
- Heat: 40+ degree summers degrade rubber compounds.
- Wheel misalignment: can destroy a tread in 15,000 km.
- Under-inflation: causes shoulder wear and overheating.
- Aggressive driving: hard cornering scrubs tread fast.
- Long parking in direct sun: UV cracks sidewalls.
When to replace regardless of tread
- Age: 6 years from manufacture is a sensible upper limit, even with tread left.
- Sidewall cracks: cracked rubber means UV damage — replace.
- Bulges or blisters: internal damage. Stop driving on it.
- Tread below 3 mm: legal minimum is 1.5 mm but wet braking is dangerous below 3 mm.
