5 Signs Your Tyres Need Replacing
By Tyre On Sale Team·13 June 2026 5 min read
1. Tread depth under 3 mm
Legal minimum in WA is 1.5 mm, but braking distance doubles below 3 mm in wet conditions. Use the 20-cent test: if the outer band shows, replace immediately.
2. Age over 6 years
Even if tread looks fine, rubber hardens. Check the DOT code on the sidewall.
3. Cracking or bulging sidewalls
These are non-repairable. The tyre can fail catastrophically at highway speed.
4. Vibration above 80 km/h
Often a balance issue, but can indicate internal belt separation. Get it checked.
5. Uneven wear
Inside or outside edge wearing faster than the middle = alignment problem. Fix the alignment before new tyres or you'll burn through them.
