4WD Tyres in Perth — How to Choose Between H/T, A/T and M/T
4WD Tyres in Perth — How to Choose
Perth 4WD owners cover everything from suburban school runs to Pilbara mining tracks. The right tyre depends entirely on how you actually use the car.
H/T — Highway Terrain
Looks like a passenger tyre with light tread. Best for:
- 90%+ bitumen driving
- Fuel economy and quietness
- Towing a caravan on sealed roads
Examples: Bridgestone Dueler H/T, Michelin Latitude Tour, Goodyear Wrangler HP.
A/T — All Terrain
More aggressive tread, reinforced sidewalls. Best for:
- 50/50 bitumen and dirt/gravel
- Weekend trips up north or south-west
- Light off-road (firetrails, beach access)
Examples: BFGoodrich KO2, Cooper AT3, Toyo OPAT3, Falken Wildpeak AT3W.
M/T — Mud Terrain
Massive tread blocks, aggressive sidewalls. Best for:
- Hard off-road (Cape York, Simpson, technical 4WDing)
- Mud, deep sand, rock crawling
- Looks (yes, we know)
The trade-off: loud on the highway, worse fuel economy, shorter tread life.
Examples: BFG KM3, Cooper STT Pro, Maxxis Razr MT.
Common Perth mistake
Fitting M/Ts to a daily-driven Prado that never leaves the bitumen. You will hate the noise, hate the fuel bill and the tyres will not last. Be honest about how you use the car.
